Itálica, at Santiponce about 9 km north-west of Seville, was founded in 206 BC and was the birthplace of the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Under Hadrian it was rebuilt on a grand scale, with one of the largest amphitheatres in the Roman world.
Most of the mosaics in the Lebrija Palace came from here. The great patio mosaic was found at Los Palacios, an olive grove on the Countess's land on the slope above the amphitheatre. Many mosaics are still in place at Itálica, in the houses of the new town.
This half-day tour handles transport from Seville and fast-track entry, with a guide to explain the city. It is a good morning trip, leaving the afternoon for the Lebrija Palace.
Itálica is an open site with little shade. In summer, take the earliest departure, bring water and a hat, and keep Lebrija for later in the day when you'll appreciate its cool rooms.

You have only one day in Seville: skip Itálica and see the Roman floors at Lebrija and the Antiquarium under the Setas instead.
